When you create a shift, you define when it happens, who works it, and what qualifications are needed. Here is how each field on the form works.

The create-shift form

  • Shift Title -- a name for the shift, like "Day Shift" or "Overtime Coverage." This appears on the calendar and in the employee's schedule.
  • Start Time -- when the shift begins, on the selected calendar date.
  • End Time -- when the shift ends.
  • End Time Offset -- tells the system how many days after the start the shift ends. Options are Same Day, Next Day, Two Days Later, Three Days Later, and Four Days Later. A 24-hour shift that starts at 0700 and ends at 0700 uses Next Day; a 12-hour day shift from 0700 to 1900 uses Same Day.
  • Shift Slots -- a repeater where you add one row per seat on the shift. Each slot has a required Qualification (Paramedic, EMT, Driver, etc.) and an optional User. Leave the user blank to post the slot as an open shift that crew can bid on.
  • Notes -- optional free-text notes attached to the shift.

Step by step

  1. Click the day on the calendar where you want the shift.
  2. Fill in the Shift Title.
  3. Set the Start Time and End Time.
  4. Choose the End Time Offset.
  5. Add at least one slot, pick its Qualification, and optionally assign a User.
  6. Add Notes if needed.
  7. Save the shift.

Example

You need a paramedic for a 24-hour shift starting Monday at 0800. You click Monday, set the title to "Medic 1 -- 24hr," enter 0800 as Start Time and 0800 as End Time with End Time Offset set to Next Day. You add one slot, pick "Paramedic" for the qualification, and assign the user. After saving, the shift appears on Monday and stretches into Tuesday.
